About
I'm a forest ecologist focused on studying and protecting ancient trees and forests around the world. I'm interested in understanding how trees grow and interact with their environment, how forests respond to environmental change, and how science and public outreach can be used to help conserve forest ecosystems on a rapidly changing planet.
I received a B.S. in Natural Resources Planning from Humboldt State University (1992), a M.S. in Forestry from Humboldt State University (2004), and a Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley (2009). I previously worked as a research scientist at UC Berkeley (2009-2019) and am now currently serving as Executive Director for The Marmot Society (non-profit forest research and outreach organization) and Canopy Dynamics LLC (private consulting business). In addition to my academic career, I have worked in various positions as a forestry and GIS technician, forest firefighter, environmental advocate, and U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in the Kingdom of Tonga, South Pacific.
I love to explore wild places and enjoy tree and rock climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, surfing, skiing, snowboarding, biking, and sharing the beauty of the world through photography and visual storytelling.
